Ακολουθεί η συγκινητική ομιλία του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίου, κατά την διάρκεια του δείπνου για τα 30 χρόνια από την ενθρόνισή του, στο εστιατόριο Loeb Boathouse, στη Νέα Υόρκη.
“Να μιλήσω στα ελληνικά, αλλά τι να πρωτοπώ; Ποιον να πρωτοευχαριστήσω; Πώς να εκφράσω τα συναισθήματα που με κατακλύζουν αυτήν την παραμονή της αναχωρήσεώς μου, μαζί με την τιμία συνοδεία μου, από κοντά σας.
Πέρασαν 12 ημέρες γεμάτες από εμπειρίες, από χαρές. Με αγκαλιάσατε με αγάπη αδελφική και υλική, με την αγάπη σας, με τα λόγια σας, με τα έργα σας, με τα δώρα σας, με τις δεξιώσεις και τα γεύματα που προσφέρατε και οργανώσατε προς τιμήν μου, προπάντων με την καρδιά σας. Μας σκλαβώσατε.
Θα φύγουμε αύριο πολύ πλουσιότεροι απ’ ό,τι ήρθαμε σε εμπειρίες, σε αισθήματα, γεμάτοι από ευγνωμοσύνη. Είχα 12 χρόνια να έρθω στην Αμερική και αυτή την φορά που ήρθα συνέπεσε –έτσι οργανώθηκαν τα πράγματα– να γιορτάζω μαζί σας απόψε τα 30 ολόκληρα χρόνια από την ενθρόνισή μου στον πάνσεπτο και πανίερο Οικουμενικό. Τιμούμε εκείνη την στιγμή με συγκίνηση.
Εκείνη την ημέρα ήταν Σάββατο 2 Νοεμβρίου. Εγώ στον πατριαρχικό θρόνο, δίπλα μου στο παραθρόνιο ο τότε Πρωθυπουργός της Ελλάδας –αείμνηστος– Κωνσταντίνος Μητσοτάκης, ο πατέρας του σημερινού Πρωθυπουργού. Λίγο πιο πέρα, ο Αντώνης Σαμαράς ως Υπουργός Εξωτερικών. Ο εν Αγκύρα Πρέσβης της Ελλάδος, Δημήτρης Μακρής, και πάρα πολύς κόσμος που είχε έρθει από παντού. Από εδώ, την Αμερική, ο μακαριστός Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ιάκωβος, ο νονός μου, διότι με βάφτισε ως ανάδοχός μου η αδερφή του, η αείμνηστος Χρυσάνθη. Ο Ιάκωβος, επικεφαλής πολυμελούς αντιπροσωπείας της Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής. Φυσικά, ανάμεσα στους παρόντες, πάρα πολλοί Κωνσταντινουπολίτες αδελφοί. Το τονίζω αυτό το “πάρα πολλοί” διότι, σε αυτά τα 30 χρόνια, δυστυχώς λιγοστέψαμε ακόμη περισσότερο, λόγω των… πολύ ευνοϊκών δι ημάς συνθηκών. Και ένα μεγάλο δώρο του Θεού προς εμένα, οι γονείς μου (σ.σ. συγκινείται και χειροκροτείται). Λέω “μεγάλο δώρο του Θεού”, διότι εμένα με αξίωσε να τους δώσω αυτήν την χαρά, την υπερηφάνεια και την συγκίνηση να βλέπουν ένα από τα παιδιά τους στον Πατριαρχικό Θρόνο, σε ηλικία 51 ετών.
Πάλι λέω και ξαναλέω, όχι μόνο απόψε μπροστά στην αγάπη σας, αλλά κάθε μέρα και κάθε βράδυ, «Δόξα τω Θεώ πάντων ένεκεν». Όχι μόνο για τη μέρα εκείνη που άρχισε η Πατριαρχία μου, αλλά για όσα μου έδωσε κατά την διάρκεια των 30 ετών. Πολλές χαρές, ανάμεσα στο απανταχού της γης ποίμνιον της εκκλησίας. Πήγα σχεδόν σε όλες τις Μητροπόλεις και Αρχιεπισκοπές του Πατριαρχείου μας, από τη Νέα Ζηλανδία, μέχρι τον Καναδά, μέχρι το Μεξικό και τον Παναμά. Στην Κορέα τέσσερεις φορές, την Αυστραλία τρεις φορές, το Χονγκ Κονγκ και παντού, σχεδόν σε όλες τις Μητροπόλεις της Ευρώπης, με αξίωσε να κάνω δέκα σχεδόν διεθνή και διαθρησκειακά οικολογικά συμπόσια. Το Πατριαρχείο μας έχει την πρωτοπορία στον χώρο της προστασίας του φυσικού Περιβάλλοντος. Και το Βατικανό και ο Αγιώτατος Πάπας Φραγκίσκος αναγνωρίζουν αυτήν την συμβολή μας στην μεγάλη αυτή υπόθεση που αφορά σε όλη την ανθρωπότητα.
Με αξίωσε να εκλέξω και να χειροτονήσω, φυσικά μαζί με την Αγία και Ιερά Σύνοδο, πολλούς νέους αρχιερείς οι οποίοι στελεχώνουν τις επαρχίες του Θρόνου, είτε ως ποιμενάρχες, είτε ως Βοηθοί Επίσκοποι. Μπήκε καινούργιο αίμα στον οργανισμό της Εκκλησίας και ο Άγιος Αμερικής είναι ένα από αυτά τα παραδείγματα, λαμπρά παραδείγματα, μαζί με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αυστραλίας Μακάριο, τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Θυατείρων και Μεγάλης Βρετανίας, Νικήτα, νέους Μητροπολίτες στην Αυστρία, την Σουηδία, την Γαλλία, την Ισπανία κ.ό.κ.
Βλέπουμε την διακονία, βλέπουμε πόσο καταναλίσκονται στην υπηρεσία του λαού του Θεού, χωρίς διακρίσεις, με αγάπη προς όλους. Επειδή σε πολλές μητροπόλεις μας υπάρχουν όχι μόνο Έλληνες πιστοί, αλλά και άλλων εθνικοτήτων, άλλων πολιτισμικών καταβολών, και αυτούς οι ποιμενάρχες μας τους διακονούν και τους εξυπηρετούν, όπως είπα, χωρίς καμία διάκριση, με την ίδια αγάπη προς όλους, διότι όλοι είναι πνευματικά τους παιδιά.
Θα μπορούσα να πω πάρα πολλά, αλλά κινδυνεύω να χαρακτηριστώ ως “περιαυτολογών”. Όχι δεν συμβαίνει αυτό, διότι ότι επετελέσθη σε αυτά τα 30 χρόνια δεν το έκανα εγώ. Είπα και προχθές στην Αρχιεπισκοπή ότι “μία χελιδών έαρ ου ποιεί”. Ο ηγέτης όσο ικανός και να είναι, όσο εργατικός και να είναι δεν μπορεί να επιτελέσει πολλά πράγματα χωρίς τους συνεργάτες και εγώ έχω πάντοτε την 12μελή Αγία και Ιερά Σύνοδο περί εμέ. Οι Αρχιερείς που συμμετέχουν στην Ιερά Σύνοδο διακονούν ως συνοδικοί πάρεδροι ένα χρόνο και αποχωρούν, έρχονται άλλοι. Υπάρχει αυτή η rotation όπως λέμε εδώ και όλοι συμβάλουν εις το διοικητικό έργο της εκκλησίας, όλοι φέρνουν από τις επαρχίες τους τις εμπειρίες τους και τις προσδοκίες του ποιμνίου τους και όλοι λαμβάνουν από το Φανάρι σοφία, καθοδήγηση, έμπνευση.
Όλους τους αδελφούς τους αγαπούμε εξίσου, τους τιμούμε, τους ευγνωμονούμε για ό,τι κάνουν στις επαρχίες τους, για ό,τι κάνουν ως μέλη της Αγίας Ιεράς Συνόδου, για την πιστότητά τους, για την αφοσίωσή τους στην Μητέρα Εκκλησία. Χωρίς αυτούς εμείς οι ολίγοι στην Κωνσταντινούπολη δεν θα είχαμε την δυνατότητα να κάνουμε και πολλά πράγματα.
Είναι καλύτερα να σταματήσω και να κλείσω ευχαριστώντας και πάλι όλους και ένα έκαστον προσωπικό. Ελπίζω να με αξιώσει ο Θεός, πριν αναχωρήσω από τον κόσμο αυτόν να έρθω μια άλλη φορά στην Αμερική (σ.σ. χειροκρότημα) να δω την πρόοδο, να δω τα επιτεύγματά σας, να χαρώ την αρχοντιά, την αφοσίωσή σας στην μητέρα εκκλησία. Να καμαρώσω όλα αυτά που θα κάνετε τα επόμενα χρόνια όλοι μαζί υπό την ηγεσία του νέου Αρχιεπισκόπου και ποιμενάρχου σας αδελφού Αγίου Αμερικής. Θέλω κλείνοντας να ζητήσω συγγνώμη από όλους αυτούς που δυσκολεύονται να προφέρουν το όνομα Ελπιδοφόρος, διότι εγώ του το έδωσα, είμαι υπεύθυνος.

Beloved Children in the Lord,
It is with sincere joy and paternal delight that we share this meal with all of you in this beautiful atmosphere of the Loeb Boat House in Central Park, whose owner, Mr. Dean Poll, as well as the AHEPA Charitable Fund, we especially thank for their generosity to sponsor our anniversary dinner this evening. This Patriarchal Visit has been filled with remarkable experiences, especially today at Ground Zero. To behold the Saint Nicholas National Shrine standing as a shimmering marble Temple, after so many years, has filled our heart with unspeakable gladness.
And to bring the Holy Relic of the Wonderworker of Myra into the Shrine, so that here in the New World – in America – the blessing of his presence may always be with you, brings great spiritual satisfaction to our soul.
In this spirit, we would be remiss if we failed to express our deep gratitude to three remarkable women: to Mrs. Robin Psaros, for her discreet, but substantial and ceaseless support, together with her husband, Archon Michael Psaros, not only in making St Nicholas Church and National Shrine a reality, but also in sustaining and promoting the mission of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America; as well as to Mrs. Paulette Poulos, the pillar of Leadership 100, and Mrs. Elaine Allen, treasurer of the Archdiocesan Council, because without their outstanding contribution our Apostolic visit to the United States wouldn’t be possible and successful.
On this day, as you all know, we commemorate the Thirtieth Anniversary of our Enthronement upon the Throne of Saints Andrew the First-Called, Gregory the Theologian, John the Golden-mouth (Chrysostom), and so many other saints and distinguished theologians and ecclesiastical leaders. And in celebrating this milestone, we understand that God has graced us with the longest tenure of any of our predecessors.
Therefore, we were well pleased to know, that we would end this day in your company, enjoying the hospitality of our spiritual son, His Eminence Elpidophoros. And since it is his Nameday, it is meet and right that he offers this banquet of love and of delight. We wish him many, many years upon the Archiepiscopal Throne of America.
This last night of our apostolic visit in America is one of reflection. The thirty years of our Patriarchal tenure have witnessed momentous changes in the world, and particularly in the Orthodox Oikoumene.
Our role as Ecumenical Patriarch has been, and continues to be, the modulating influence that hold the rudder of the Ship of the Church firmly, as She navigates the waters of modernity and secular change.
At the Phanar, we are accustomed to the vagaries of political change, and we have lived in a non-Orthodox, non-Christian world for over five hundred years. But before that, we also fulfilled a history in what the late Sir Steven Runciman called “a noble experiment” – the symphony of Church and State in the Eastern Roman Empire.
What you should all remember is that the memory of the Mother Church is continuous, through century after century. The exigencies of any given decade, or Patriarchy, or political context, in no way deprive the Church of this memory, which extends back to the Apostles themselves.
This is precisely why the connectivity to, and the consciousness of the Mother Church of Constantinople, is so vital to the Holy Archdiocese of America. Cultivate this awareness among the faithful, for it will enrich their experience of their faith and piety!
And this is why our Patriarchy has been so deeply committed to the vision of the worldwide Orthodox Church, not as a federation of independent bodies, but as one Church family united around the Holy Table and the Divine Eucharist.
Therefore, the Ecumenical Patriarchate is pledged to inclusion and not exclusion. And our inclusivity is based on both love and truth: Love for all beings and this planet earth we all call home; and the truth that in Christ we can resolve every difference and every difficulty, as long as we are honest and truthful to God, to each other, and to ourselves.
We who are called to serve the Church in these roles—whether parish Priest or Ecumenical Patriarch – are called to serve with our minds in the heavens, but our feet on the ground. This is one reason why we return to our island of Imvros as often as possible, and walk the paths of our youth and visit the churches and chapels where we first learned to love and worship God. For the good earth grounds us in reality, and reminds us of our interdependence with each other.
At an anniversary such as this, our mind is drawn back to the beginning – to a more carefree time. Whether on Imvros, or in the Schools of Constantinople – the Zografeion Lyceum and Halki, where our education began to ascend. Or our early days in Rome, Bossey-Switzerland and Munich, completing our academic pursuits; but we did not see in the beginning what we now see, with the benefit of all these years of hindsight.
Beloved Children in the Lord: The Church is greater than anything we can imagine. Our Holy God – worshipped in Trinity, calls all people to communion, and to the life in Christ.
We were not placed here to rule anyone other than ourselves. But we are all called to serve everyone. And to serve them humbly, righteously, and always with mercy and compassion.
Therefore, with these reflections, we commend all of you to the mercy and love of God.
May this Archdiocese ever reach higher and higher in every spiritual virtue and grace.
May you always possess peace among yourselves, so that you can manifest to the world how to be peace-makers, in accord with the blessing of our Savior.
So we raise this toast in your honor, congratulating your Archbishop and all the beloved brothers of the Eparchial Synod – whose faithfulness to the Mother Church and dedication to the unity of the Archdiocese give all of us joy. And we congratulate the faithful clergy and laity of this blessed Archdiocese, for all that they give every day, for the work of the Church and the glory of God.
May our almighty and compassionate Lord bless you all with His abiding love and infinite mercy.

This evening, my heart swells with great emotion and feeling, as we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of our beloved spiritual father’s and Ecumenical Patriarch’s enthronement. Thirty years ago, as the ever-memorable Archbishop Iakovos congratulated His All-Holiness by invoking the names of the Saints of this day, he planted a seed in that great mind of our Patriarch, which led to my own transformation, becoming “Elpidophoros.”
Your All-Holiness, as I stand here tonight, it is truly impossible for me to express to You my profound gratitude and filial devotion. You have given me the greatest gift possible — to serve this Holy Eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne, and to join my name with those of my blessed and venerable predecessors, who have faithfully served this Sacred Archdiocese.
Indeed, I am deeply humbled that the name You gave me at my ordination coincides with this historic anniversary of Your momentous and awe-inspiring Patriarchy. Again, Your All-Holiness, words fail in my expressions of thanksgiving to Your sacred person.
For all of us in the Archdiocese, our connection to You for more than a generation has been reinforced by Your visits to the United States. You have not hesitated to travel by land, sea and air in order to come to know Your American flock. Our response has always been one of joy and elation, but as Archbishop, I feel that we must honor Your All-Holiness further — by forming a massive education project on the history, meaning and vision of the Mother Church of Constantinople.
At the beginning of this visit, Your All-Holiness called us, as You did on Your first visit twenty-four years ago, “the newly planted branch of the ancient vine of Christ’s first called disciple Saint Andrew.” All of our authority to teach and to preach Christ — episcopal, parochial, ecclesial and canonical — comes to us from the Mother Church. There is no other source for us from which we can drink deeply from the well-springs of the Holy Orthodox Faith of Christ. We are the children of Holy Wisdom — of the Holy Great Church of Christ. And the spiritual pillars that are established in Constantinople on our behalf, are unmovable and unbreakable.
In Your venerable person, Your All-Holiness, we behold the living, physical connection to the spiritual reality of the faith of the apostles, the faith of the fathers and the faith that secures the universe. This is no small thing; it must be taught day and night, from one coast to the other.
Therefore, this evening’s feast of love and fellowship is also a feast of dedication — a renewed dedication to the Mother Church in hitherto uncharted directions.
We rejoice that the Order of Saint Andrew has led the way through the establishment of the eponymous Foundation in Your All-Holiness’ honor. Earlier today, the Saint Nicholas National Shrine received from Your precious hands the special blessing of the opening of its doors. These ministries, in particular, bode well for a renewal of dedication to the Church in America.
And I would be remiss if I did not mention the Reverend Protopresbyter Alexander Karloutsos and the ever-gracious Presvytera Xanthi, who have ceaselessly and selflessly labored on behalf of the Mother Church for many decades — both here in America and around the globe. Together, the Foundation and the Shrine owe an inestimable debt to them — for their commitment, persistence and effectual service in so many endeavors on behalf of the Ecumenical Throne!
Your All-Holiness, tonight, please accept from our hearts, our lips, and our hands our most sincere tokens of appreciation, gratitude, esteem and respect.
Above all, please accept our abiding love as well — that is, a genuine and sincere love of a child for its father, its protector and its guardian.
You have always been and will continue to be all of these and much, much more to us. Like all the Josephs of Scripture,[*] You provide for our needs, You raise us up in the ways of the Lord, and You comfort us in our sorrows. You are a father to us, who is worthy of the Heavenly Father, Who, like the sun in the sky, shines with loving light on all, without regard to their worthiness.
And so, we offer our humble prayers and wishes to You for Your health, Your spiritual prosperity and Your length of days.
Your All-Holiness, may You live long in the land, and may we be blessed to enjoy Your paternal presence and to receive Your Patriarchal benediction for many, many more years to come!
