Το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο τιμήθηκε με το Βραβείο Γενναδίου από την Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα. Η απονομή πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 8 Μαΐου 2025, κατά τη διάρκεια της ετήσιας εκδήλωσης της Σχολής στο Gotham Hall της Νέας Υόρκης.
Το Βραβείο Γενναδίου αποτελεί την ύψιστη τιμητική διάκριση της Βιβλιοθήκης Γενναδίου και απονέμεται για την εξαιρετική συμβολή στη διατήρηση και προώθηση του ελληνικού πολιτισμού και της ελληνικής παιδείας. Η επιλογή του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου αναγνωρίζει τον διαχρονικό του ρόλο ως θεματοφύλακα της ελληνικής γλώσσας, της ορθόδοξης πίστης και της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του Ελληνισμού.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης, παρουσιάστηκε και ένα σύντομο ντοκιμαντέρ με τίτλο «Φύλακες του Ελληνισμού: Το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης», το οποίο περιλαμβάνει συνέντευξη του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίου και αναδεικνύει την παγκόσμια σημασία και την πολιτιστική κληρονομιά του Πατριαρχείου.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής κ. Ελπιδοφόρος και ο Μητροπολίτης Γέρων Δέρκων κ. Απόστολος παρέστησαν στην εκδήλωση, εκπροσωπώντας το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ελπιδοφόρος, στον χαιρετισμό του, τόνισε τη σημασία της βράβευσης, επισημαίνοντας ότι το Πατριαρχείο αποτελεί «προπύργιο του Ελληνισμού» και ότι η απονομή του βραβείου είναι «μια λογική κατάληξη» για έναν θεσμό που διαχρονικά διαφυλάσσει την ελληνική πολιτιστική κληρονομιά.
This year’s event will honor the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, recipient of the 2025 Gennadius Prize, awarded in recognition of its extraordinary contributions to Greek learning and Hellenism.
As part of this year’s celebration, a special short film titled Guardians of Hellenism: The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople will premiere during the Gala. In preparation for its production, Andreas Zombanakis, Chair of the Gennadius Library Board of Overseers, George Orfanakos, Executive Director of the American School, and Maria Georgopoulou, Director of the Gennadius Library, traveled to the Theological School of Halki. There, they filmed the Theological School’s library, classrooms, and grounds.
Founded in 1844 to meet the educational needs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Orthodox Church, the Theological School of Halki is perched atop the Hill of Hope on Heybeliada, one of the Prince’s Islands, about an hour from Constantinople. Its library, dating back to Byzantine times, is among the world’s richest, housing more than 120,000 books, journals, and manuscripts. In 1971, the School was closed by a law of the Turkish government that prohibited the operation of private higher educational institutions and remains closed to this day. The Orthodox faithful and friends of Orthodoxy continue to visit its premises as a place of pilgrimage. Recently, under the initiative of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, international ecological symposia and conferences have been organized there, with distinguished foreign participants.
