He specializes in political theology, nationalism and the religious aspects of the anti-colonial struggle, with a particular focus on Greek Orthodoxy. Smytsnyuk was the Director of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies and a Senior Lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine.
