Stephanos Ritsi (Albania)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PROPOSALS FOR THE PROBLEMS OF CATECHESIS&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>IN THE MISSION FIELD OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>VOLOS 11-15\/01\/2023<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Metropolitan Gregory of Cameroon<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for your invitation to participate in this Theological Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my daily experience of bringing the Gospel Word to African reality, I discover many distortions and misunderstandings in the way in which people in Africa try to understand and employ this Gospel Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient Greeks said that&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cthe&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>beginning<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>&nbsp;of wisdom is the examination of terms\u201d<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 this means that in order to understand one another (a speaker and a listener, a teacher and a student, etc.) and for one to receive from the other, we need to speak the same conceptual language. Hold on to this thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I believe that one of the big mistakes that have been made in the&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cEvangelization of the nations\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>in our days is thewrong&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cstrategy\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>in the issue of Catechizing our brothers in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are the causes of this error?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will summarize them in three points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In coming to a place where countless Christian confessions coexist, we feel these surroundings&nbsp;as an immediate threat and spend dozens of hours, days, months, and years trying to explain our differences to the people, and of course that we are&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cthe best ones\u201d<\/strong><\/em>,&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cthe right ones\u201d<\/strong><\/em>,<em><strong>&nbsp;\u201cthe true Christians\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>\u2013 always theoretically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Likewise, we ignore the&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cmindset\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>of the people to whom we address the Gospel Word.&nbsp;For thousands of years now, this mindset and manner of thought has been shaped by countless things: experiences, myths, songs, etc., and it has been transmitted up to this day through thousands of oral traditions, words of sages, prejudices and superstitions, historical events \u2013 that is, by that which constitutes a culture\u2019s \u201ctradition\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furthermore, we ignore that the majority of African Traditional Religions does not perceive the salvation of man as sometime in the future, in another life, but rather Salvation is defined and focused within the limits of this life, with a purely material and materialistic character and not a spiritual one. That is, generally speaking, we can summarize the meaning of salvation in the following phrase:&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201ca person in Africa is saved when he acquires many goods\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. It is also important that the dead are not understood to move away from the land and place where they were born \u2013 they simply exist near the living in a different form.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><u><strong>What needs to be done to change this situation?<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Patristic Literature, the world is divided into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a. Jews and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. Greeks (this term includes those in general outside the Jewish tradition).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, many Church Fathers emphasize the need to&nbsp;<strong>\u201cadapt\u201d the Catechism&nbsp;<\/strong>to the audience to which we address it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I speak about Christ in one way to a Jew and in another way to a non-Jew. Besides, it is no coincidence, that the same Gospel texts use appropriate language and appropriate images and representations according to the readers to whom they are addressed. For example, the Gospel according to Matthew is addressed to an audience familiar with the Old Testament, in contrast to the Gospels of Mark and Luke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jesuit Missionaries took the principle of adaptation so far that they justified even the weaknesses of the catechumens, anticipating that, in the future, they would be gradually eliminated. This disposition of theirs twice led to the dissolution of their Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As taught today, dogmatic teaching&nbsp;presupposes basic knowledge of Greek philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps we should study ancient&nbsp;<strong>\u201cpre-baptismal catechisms\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>and types of&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>baptismal confessions\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(simpler forms of the Creed) as much as possible, in order to understand how the Apostles and their immediate successors taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, before we can understand the way of the Apostles, we need to understand some basic things about how Christ Himself taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is clearly present in the Gospel&nbsp;<em>(which records part of the then oral tradition about the teaching of Jesus Christ)&nbsp;<\/em>is a base consisting of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. the Prophetic tradition of the Ancient (Old) Testament and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. the contemplative philosophical mindset and view of life springing from the&nbsp;<strong>Psalms&nbsp;<\/strong>and the so-called Wisdom Literature (<em><strong>Wisdom of Solomon, Wisdom of Sirach, Ecclesiastes and Proverbs of Solomon<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These books are in daily use today by Church Communities worldwide, and we can divide them into two groups according to their use in Church liturgical tradition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those in daily traditional use in the life of the Church \u2013<strong>&nbsp;mainly the book of Psalms&nbsp;<\/strong>and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those which are heard occasionally in Church, that is, in most cases, at the commemorations of the Saints, especially in Vespers \u2013 mostly the books of the&nbsp;<strong>Wisdom of Solomon and Proverbs, more rarely Wisdom of Sirach, and very rarely, Ecclesiastes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, in our days, when few have the specialized education to grasp the deeper meanings of the passages from these books, the majority consider that reading them is a matter of formality \u2013 we read them because that is what the Liturgical Rubrics define for the feast!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let us emphasize that Christian communities of the first centuries did not have today\u2019s Liturgical Rubrics for the commemorations of Saints and Martyrs, and that is why there was a strong engagement with and study of the personalities and lives of the Prophets and the Righteous of the Ancient (Old) Testament.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, the Prophetic Theology and the book of Psalms constituted the inexhaustible arsenal of the Fathers\u2019 polemical or anti-heretical efforts against hundreds of heresies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given that today, most preachers of the Gospel limit their interpretive activities to passages from the Gospels and Epistles, to the Lives of the Saints and more often to the sayings of contemporary Elders, and given that few interpreters of Scripture have immersed themselves in the Old Testament, these books are rendered incomprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Gregory of Nyssa, among many other Fathers of our Holy Church, has done high-quality interpretations of many passages from these books, revealing their enormous depth and presenting them as the everyday philosophy of Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He considers the content of the Psalms as a procession towards the perfection of Christians through Virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He connects the comprehension of each book with the comprehension of the Psalms and Proverbs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thus it follows that the Psalms and Proverbs constitute the preparatory course for Christian preaching.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method of teaching through Proverbs and words of Sages is something well known and used on a daily basis in the life of Africa, and if we study the African Proverbs we will find common ground with the spirit of the Proverbs of Solomon, the Psalms, and the rest of the Wisdom Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will also find, in African proverbs and myths, a&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cTheology\u201d of God&#8217;s actions<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s do a necessary clarification and outline of African religions: African religions&nbsp;<em>(south of the Sahara)&nbsp;<\/em>are for the most part Monotheistic with interventions between humans and God the Creator on the part of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a.&nbsp;<strong>subordinate deities&nbsp;<\/strong>and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b&nbsp;<strong>. various spirits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic framework of this Monotheistic understanding is the belief that man was once with God in heaven&nbsp;<em>(even heaven was spread out on the earth),&nbsp;<\/em>but something happened that angered and saddened God, and He distanced Himself along with Heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, as people engaged in cultivating the land, they gave more importance to values such as&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cfertility,\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>and deities related to&nbsp;<em><strong>\u201cmother earth\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>came to the fore, while they began to seek and see the divine in more tangible and concrete manifestations of life such as fertility and sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I therefore insist that what missionary Catechesis needs is<em><strong>&nbsp;to Educate in a way of thinking before giving a way of life&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>(the Christian way of life), and before occupying itself with the highest and most perfect of the Gospel commandments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this would consist in first enriching the Africans\u2019 existing resources and mindset&nbsp;<strong>(by means of the myths and African proverbs)&nbsp;<\/strong>with theway and the spirit that come from the Psalms, the Proverbs of Solomon and the other books of the Ancient (Old) Testament \u2013 a resource capable of curing every superstition in a way not unlike the ways African culture and tradition are transmitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I firmly believe that these specific books are a unique means of contact with the African world, and not only that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because, until this day, we follow a wrong method in emphasizing the more developed forms of Christian Preaching and Catechism, which seem effective superficially, but in the long run prove catastrophic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The redirected approach on our part of offering a basic means of philosophizing in a Christian way may be time-consuming, but it will give a much more solid basis for the offering and interpretation of the Gospel Word in the African
