Doch die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Prinzeninsel vor Istanbul ist zum Synonym eines christlichen Dramas geworden. Der malerische H\u00fcgel, den die Griechen Chalki nennen, beheimatet die traditionsreiche Hochschule des \u00d6kumenischen Patriarchats, die der t\u00fcrkische Staat 1971 schlie\u00dfen lie\u00df und f\u00fcr deren Revitalisierung die Orthodoxie seither wirbt. \u201eDie Wiederer\u00f6ffnung von Chalki ist das Wichtigste\u201c, sagt der griechisch-orthodoxe Metropolit Arsenios Kardamakis auf meine Frage, was der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Wunsch seines Patriarchen an den t\u00fcrkischen Staat sei. Seit mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert steht die Hochschule nun still. Die G\u00e4nge und die Vorlesungss\u00e4le, die altmodischen Klassenzimmern gleichen, sind sauber, aber leer. Die G\u00e4rten werden sorgsam gepflegt. \u201eWir haben hier existenziell Theologie in Verbindung mit dem geistlichen Leben erfahren\u201c, sagt der orthodoxe Theologe und \u00d6kumeniker Grigorios Larentzakis, der von 1961 bis 1965 hier studierte. \u201eDie Fakult\u00e4t kann jederzeit in Betrieb gehen. Wenn die t\u00fcrkische Regierung heute die Erlaubnis gibt, startet der Lehrbetrieb im n\u00e4chsten Semester.\u201c Die Bibliothek ist voller Kostbarkeiten und beeindruckend, aber veraltet. Thessaloniki, Athen und andere Universit\u00e4ten st\u00fcnden in den Startl\u00f6chern, bei der Modernisierung zu helfen, sagt Larentzakis. Dass der in Graz emeritierte Professor aus Kreta selbst als Dozent zur Verf\u00fcgung st\u00fcnde, best\u00e4tigt er mit einem L\u00e4cheln. Immer wieder sch\u00fcrt die Regierung in Ankara die Hoffnung auf eine Wiederzulassung jener orthodoxen Priesterausbildungsst\u00e4tte, an der einst sp\u00e4tere Patriarchen und Metropoliten studierten und der legend\u00e4re Patriarch Athenagoras Dialogpartner empfing. Die Wiederer\u00f6ffnung sei \u201ef\u00fcr die ganze Christenheit\u201c wichtig, so Larentzakis, der an einen Besuch von Kardinal Bea auf Chalki erinnert, und daran, dass hier \u201eder offene Geist\u201c des Patriarchats von Konstantinopel gepflegt wurde. \u201eDas ist ein heiliger, aber ungerecht behandelter Ort\u201c, sagt Abt Kassian von Chalki. 1971 sei die Hochschule der System\u00e4nderung im t\u00fcrkischen Bildungssystem zum Opfer gefallen. \u201eAber wenn man gewollt h\u00e4tte, w\u00e4re eine L\u00f6sung zum Nutzen des \u00d6kumenischen Patriarchats und der Christenheit zu finden gewesen.\u201c Das Gesetz, das den Betrieb privater Hochschulen verbot, beendete den 127 Jahre w\u00e4hrenden Hochschulbetrieb und beraubte das \u00d6kumenische Patriarchat der M\u00f6glichkeit, Priester auf eigenem Gebiet auszubilden. Die Tragweite dieses Schritts blieb auch der Weltpolitik nicht verborgen: 1998 forderte der US-Kongress die Wiederer\u00f6ffnung der Hochschule. 1999 besuchte US-Pr\u00e4sident Bill Clinton die Insel und appellierte an den t\u00fcrkischen Pr\u00e4sidenten S\u00fcleyman Demirel, die Hochschule wieder arbeiten zu lassen. \u00c4hnlich \u00e4u\u00dferten sich vielfach die EU-Kommission und das Europ\u00e4ische Parlament. Der t\u00fcrkische Staat deutete \u00f6fter ein Entgegenkommen an, etwa als er die Ernennung eines Metropoliten zum Abt des aus dem 9. Jahrhundert stammenden Dreifaltigkeitsklosters auf Chalki gestattete. Die Regierungspartei AKP stellte jedoch ein fatales Junktim her, indem sie daran erinnerte, dass es in ganz Athen nicht eine Moschee gebe.
