Good morning everyone.  <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Today we are here to attend the second day of the Conference
\norganized by AD\u0130P ,as scholars, scientists, researchers, volunteers, from
\nvarious ethnic, religious, cultural and geographical backgrounds.Its my great
\nhonour to welcome you all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dear
\nFriends and<\/span> Participants
\nof this Conference,<\/span><\/p>\n

          <\/span>We live in a land of miracles. Our
\nTurkey, our Anatolia is truly an <\/span>\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae<\/span>, the horizon line of the ascendant human spirit for centuries.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly twelve thousand years ago, \u201cthe world\u2019s first temple\u201d[*]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>
\nwas built at <\/span>G\u00f6bekli Tepe<\/span>. This worship place, where pre- historic \u201cmasters\u201d
\nmanaged to erect seven-ton engraved pillars, tells us a lot about mysteries of
\nlife and death. The worship tradition established in G\u00f6beklitepe was followed
\nby many different traditions for thousand years till today. Human being builds
\nexternal monuments, in order to express internal processes of creation,
\nsalvation, and realization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Our legacy in Anatolia is rich and textured fabric
\nof these monuments, both great and small. <\/span>This geography is a culmination of pluralism.<\/span> <\/b>Throughout our history,
\nAnatolia has been a crossroad for civilizations. Thus, our  <\/span>common heritage is shared by an array of different
\nethnic and religious communities. We are a heterogeneous community, whose genetic
\npool is a proof to our complexity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I think that we should preserve and respect not only the cultural and
\nreligious assets of our ancestors but also we need to respect and cherish the
\nbuildings and cultural representations of the living communities. Their
\ntraditions and spiritual aspirations are inherited and interpreted throughout
\ncenturies and are essential for our long-lasting Anatolian identity. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

As you all know the rock
\nlayers are an open book from which we can read the past of our planet. Each
\nrock layer is precious and meaningful, one cannot extract any of those layers
\nfrom the history of the earth. This reasoning can be applied to cultural layers
\nas well. You cannot understand and interpret any society without treasuring and
\npreserving all its layers, past and present ones. Moreover, only when we respect the past we can inspire an inclusive,
\negalitarian and creative future society.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the respect and awareness that geologists and archeologists
\nhave for every soil layer that constitudes the past should inspire us all and all
\ncomponents of our society (social, political and religious) have an obligation
\nto respect the cultural and spiritual layers of the past and present.   <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It is well established that in the 20th<\/sup> century, a lack of
\neducation and extensive disinformation created unfortunate gaps of knowledge about
\nthe history of our land. Moreover, severe intolerance and enmity towards the
\nNon-Muslim Anatolian heritage wreaked havoc on monuments of the past.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

There have been decades, when many non- Muslim worship places and monuments
\nwere damaged or converted to different usages. Such unfortunate circumstances
\nled to unnecessary humiliations for people, whose ancient roots should be a
\ncause of cultural pride for Turkey. Our land is not a monotony, but a symphony.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

   Nevertheless, the last two decades have witnessed a certain
\nprogress \u2013 especially among the young generations, as well as a practical sensibility
\namong the local authorities, to cooperate with experts and relevant community
\nmembers. This has led to proper, respectful and scientific restoration of some
\nchurches and synagogues, but still there is a long way to go.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The restoration of the dialog among different community groups is as
\nimportant as the restoration of religious sites.The encounters of minority
\ntraditions with the dominant Sunni Muslim community can be moments of enrichment.
\nAs a society, we must go beyond confrontation and conflict.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Exopraxis can, and should
\nbe a shared experience of pilgrimage, rather than an excuse for seizure and
\nexpropriation. Think of the <\/span>Greek Orthodox Monastery of St.
\nGeorge on the island of B\u00fcy\u00fckada, in the Sea of Marmara, that attracts tens of
\nthousands of Muslim pilgrims every year. They come to make votive offerings at
\nthe place \u2013 the <\/span>\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/span> of this most famous
\nChristian Saint in the Islamic world. These Muslim pilgrims are engaging in a
\nform of exopraxis <\/span>that is the essence of shared pilgrimage, one that is respectful
\nof the original intent of the place, where the spiritual topography remains
\nintact. The same motivation can be experienced also at the historical Greek
\nOrthodox Monastery of Sumela, the Armenian Church in Ahtamar in lake of Van, in
\nCappadoce, in Ephesus and in Tur Abdin region.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nintegrity of a place is a symbol for the integrity of a person, or group of people.
\nWhen different communities can share the same space \u2013 even if they have different
\nassociations, we build a stronger and more integrated society for all. Here in
\nTurkey, we can and should exercise this kind of shared experience, without
\npoliticization.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless,
\nwe all must admit that the <\/span>Byzantine heritage of our
\nland is still a political issue. But we must also be realistic about the fact
\nthat this Empire ended six hundred years ago. Like <\/span>G\u00f6bekli Tepe, Byzantine
\nheritage is a <\/span>remnant
\nof a glorious past. But unlike the megaliths of<\/span> <\/span>\u015eanl\u0131urfa Province<\/span>, there is still a living community using and inhabiting the
\nByzantine heritage of our country.<\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a pity for anyone to undermine this legacy of this
\nbygone Empire, because there are so many common values to discover, and so many
\ninspiring and worthy examples to be celebrated. The recent conversions of St
\nSophia in Nicaea, in Trabzon, and last year in \u0130stanbul, of the Great Church,
\ndedicated to the Wisdom of God \u2013 the conversion of Chora \u2013<\/span>Kariye
\nwith its unique and precious mosaics, <\/span>are needless examples of how
\nmulti-cultural appreciation is terminated and how policies and programmes
\nshould not<\/i><\/b>  <\/span>be implemented. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I would also highlight here the juridical efforts of the small
\nChristians communities left in Antioch, Mardin \u2013 which has been called an
\n\u201copen-air museum\u201d by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism \u2013 and other locals, to
\nrecover their properties and preserve their heritage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

We see very often Churches for sale, or we receive calls from Anatolian
\ntowns\u2019 inhabitants proposing to buy Greek or Armenian churches, left from the
\ntime of the exodus of these communities from Anatolia. We cannot afford to buy
\nthem, and we have no people left in these regions to care for them. Hence, we expect
\nour Government to take care of these places of worship as heritage sites, and
\nnot abandon them and cause their unsuitable usage. <\/span>Monuments
\nand spaces of worship should not be an element for political rivalries, neither
\na target of conflicts or controversies. All countries, especially those
\nsuffering from prejudices concerning  <\/span>past history should invest in their
\neducational system for the protection, maintenance and transfer of cultural
\nheritage to future generations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

To that end, I am proud to be one of the founders in 2014 of the <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

K\u00fclt\u00fcrel Miras\u0131 Koruma Derne\u011fi<\/span>, the
\nAssociation for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.[\u2020]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>
\nA small group of friends, including our friend Osman Kavala whose contribution
\nwas essential, came together for this positive cause. KMKD is working
\ntirelessly with young scholars, volunteers, and professionals to preserve the
\nrichness, and to recognize and promote the visibility of all of Turkey\u2019s cultural
\nheritage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

          <\/span><\/span>My friends: We are living in days when a global pandemic has taught
\nthe world a very difficult lesson \u2013 that we are interconnected and interrelated
\nin ways beyond our imagination. But the monuments of our past tell us the same
\nthing; that even when one wave of humanity rises and another falls, we are
\nstill one big ocean of the human family.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          <\/span>The way we treat the legacies of our
\npast, and the way we preserve the remnants or monuments that are intertwined
\nwith communities that used them shows how we approach our solidarity. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

          <\/span><\/span>And to finish with, I would like to thank my old friend Do\u011fan Bermek
\nwho had the vision of creating this valuable platform of Anatolian Religions
\nand Beliefs and have created an enormous interaction among our people of Turkey
\nwith the great support of Prof \u0130\u015ftar G\u00f6zayd\u0131n, Yuri Stoyanov, Vanessa de Obaldia,
\nSevan Atao\u011flu and other friends as well as colleagues.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I really feel proud for their generous work and fantastic
\nresults.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Before
\nending my speech, I would like to remember my very good friend Nic<\/span>h<\/span>olas Manginas who passed
\naway yesterday morning. Nikos was a legend photographer and a beloved servant
\nof the Ecumenical Patriarchate and our Greek Orthodox Community. For almost 50
\nyears he has documented our social and religious life. He will be missed by all
\nwho had the privilege to witness his ministry. May his memory be eternal! <\/span><\/p>\n
