“Athonite-Ukrainian contacts in the 16th\u201318th centuries based on Cyrillic manuscripts and early printed books kept at monasteries on Mount Athos” \u2014 this was the title of the lecture delivered by Ukrainian historian Dr. Serhii Shumylo<\/a>, director of the International Institute of the Athonite Legacy, at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe in Leipzig, Germany (German: Leibniz-Institut f\u00fcr Geschichte und Kultur des \u00f6stlichen Europa \u2013 GWZO<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scholar is conducting this research under the auspices of the aforementioned Leipzig institute and with the support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In presenting his research on Ukraine\u2019s spiritual and cultural heritage on Mount Athos in Greece to German colleagues, the historian emphasized the importance of this topic for the history and heritage not only of Ukraine but also of Central and Eastern Europe as a whole (including Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, and other countries).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

According to the scholar, every Mount Athos monastery has its own libraries and archives, which house a large number of Greek, Slavic, and other manuscripts, documents, and books. The libraries of the Mount Athos monasteries have long been among the world\u2019s richest repositories of unique ancient manuscripts and early printed editions. At the same time, these libraries are primarily intended for internal monastic use, and access to them by secular researchers is limited.
According to the researcher, the largest number of Slavic manuscripts and books is preserved in the Slavic monasteries of Mount Athos:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– at the Zograf Monastery \u2014 more than 600 Slavic and more than 160 Greek manuscripts (26 on parchment) and more than 8,000 volumes of Slavic and Greek books;
– at the Hilandar Monastery \u2014 815 Slavic and 181 Greek manuscripts (47 on parchment) and more than 20,000 Slavic and Greek books;
– at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon \u2014 1,320 Greek and 150 Slavic manuscripts, and more than 20,000 books in Greek, Slavic, and other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Serhii Shumylo shared the results of his latest research with his German colleagues. In particular, he noted that preliminary research in the monastery libraries and archives of Mount Athos indicates that the largest number of early printed books published by the Kyiv Metropolis in the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Hetmanate in the 16th\u201318th centuries, have been preserved in the Slavic monasteries of Zograf (Bulgarian) and Hilandar (Serbian). For example, during a recent research expedition to the monasteries of Mount Athos, he counted 32 Cyrillic early printed books in the Zograf Monastery\u2019s collection that were published in the Kyiv Metropolis in the 16th\u201317th centuries. In addition, he counted 143 Cyrillic early printed books from the 18th century in this monastery. In the collection of the Hilandar Monastery, he documented 37 Cyrillic early printed books published in the Kyiv Metropolis in the 17th century, as well as several dozen 18th-century editions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the scholar, these collections require further research, description, and cataloging. In his view, the marginalia and other notes in the margins of early printed books are of particular value and warrant further study. In particular, among these notes, unique original autographs by Vasyl Surazhsky, Leontiy Prylepsky, and other Ukrainian religious and cultural figures of the 16th\u201318th centuries were discovered. These materials are an important source for the history of culture and book culture in Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The large number of early printed books and manuscripts preserved on Mount Athos”, Dr. Serhii Shumylo is convinced, “testifies to the close ties between the Athos monasteries and the clergy and monastic community of the Kyiv Metropolis, as well as with the Cossacks and the Cossack elite (including the hetmans and kosh-atamans of the Zaporizhian Sich), and of the spiritual and cultural influence of the Kyiv Church in the 17th\u201318th centuries throughout the Eastern Christian world, including Mount Athos. These ties had a significant impact on the development of the spiritual and cultural heritage in the Ukrainian lands, as well as on the heritage of the monasteries on Mount Athos themselves. In other words, there was a process of spiritual and cultural exchange and mutual influence on both sides\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While presenting his research in Leipzig, Dr. Serhii Shumulo expressed his gratitude to the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), as well as personally to Prof. Dr. Julia Herzberg, Prof. Dr. Matthias Hardt, and other colleagues for the invitation, their support of his research, and the opportunity to share his findings and collaborate on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to presenting his research, Dr. Serhii Shumylo participated in a number of academic colloquia at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) in Leipzig, held meetings and discussions with colleagues, familiarized himself with the work and collections of the University of Leipzig Library, and met with representatives of Leipzig\u2019s academic and religious communities. In addition, throughout June, he presented his research findings on the Mount Athos archives at the Institute for Orthodox Theology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, at the Collegium Orientale in Eichst\u00e4tt, and at the Catholic University of Eichst\u00e4tt-Ingolstadt (Katholische Universit\u00e4t Eichst\u00e4tt-Ingolstadt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, as part of his visit to German academic and educational institutions, Dr. Serhii Shumylo<\/a> held meetings and discussions on cooperation with the rector of the Collegium Orientale, Prof. Fr. Oleksandr Petrynko, the vice-rectors and staff of the Collegium, as well as with Prof. Fr. Thomas Kremer, who heads the Department of Theology of the Christian East at the Catholic University of Eichst\u00e4tt-Ingolstadt and serves as director of the university\u2019s Research Center for the Christian Orient and chairman of the \u201cSociety for the Study for the Christian Orient\u201d (GSCO), as well as with other colleagues. At the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, he held talks with the university\u2019s rector, Prof. Larysa Didkovska, and at the Institute of Orthodox Theology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) \u2014 with Prof. Dr. Stefanos Athanasiou, Dr. Nataliia Sinkevuch, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
