Esteemed Members of the Friends of Saint Nicholas,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beloved Children in the Lord,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rise this evening to pay tribute to the courageous men and women who braved to enter the fated Twin Towers \u2013 a place where Angels might have feared to tread \u2013 in order to save their fellow human beings, at the expense of their own lives. We are well-pleased that our humble person could be present and help to inaugurate what promises to be a most significant tradition of the Saint Nicholas National Shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For as the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, inscribed in the marble on the exterior of the Shrine, say so majestically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greater love has no one than this, to sacrifice your life for your friends.[1]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The heroic First Responders of every emergency service \u2013 of the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department, and the Port Authority \u2013 those who gave their lives on that fateful and terrible day can never be forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is most fitting that this inaugural event is in their memory, and that their sacrifice is presented as our \u201cBeacon of Hope.\u201d For their devotion to duty, and their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others, is truly an illumination of ineffable glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They shine as the stars in the Heavens, and like the sojourners of centuries past who journeyed guided by such celestial beacons \u2013 just as the Magi followed the Star all the way to Bethlehem \u2013 we shall invariably look to these stellar \u201cBeacons of Hope\u201d for inspiration and a moral compass for our lives. As the Oration of Pericles \u2013 also inscribed beneath the words of our Lord on the exterior of the Shrine states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026 \u1f21 \u03b4\u03cc\u03be\u03b1 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f70 \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03c7\u03cc\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9 \u03b1\u1f30\u03b5\u1f76.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026 their glory survives in everlasting remembrance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somehow, we think it is not without significance that the first casualty listed for that terrible day was a beloved Chaplain of the Fire Department, Father Mychal Judge. That shepherd of souls spared nothing in his prayerful and brave stand with his fellow rescuers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All those who perished in their valiant attempts to save others are never to be forgotten. We Orthodox Christians say \u201cMemory Eternal!\u201d, \u0391\u03b9\u03c9\u03bd\u03af\u03b1 \u03b7 \u03bc\u03bd\u03ae\u03bc\u03b7, encouraging our own minds and hearts to hold them dear, even as we know that God will never forget them in His eternal embrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, we understand the radiance that comes from self-sacrificing love. We reside in the portion of the City called the \u201cPhanar,\u201d which means \u201cLighthouse.\u201d The sacrifice of many Martyrs and Saints emblazons the history of the Mother Church of Orthodox Christianity with signal fires to light our path into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the sacrifice of the \u201cBeacons of Hope\u201d that we pay due honor and respect also are, as the Psalmist says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.<\/em> [2]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have shown us the most excellent way of love,[3] as a shining gift to every generation who will pause to behold the radiance of their sacrifice, and recognize the supreme dignity and purity of their humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We came to the Shrine yesterday, to connect both these beacons of light and hope \u2013 the Phanar and Ground Zero, by transplanting the very earth of our Old World, into the soil of this New World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in this soil of the West we mingled soil from the East, from the lands and seas out of which emerged the Omogeneia of our People, scattered like good seed in a Diaspora of Divine Providence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this conjunction of different lands, we planted a Myrtle Tree on the south side of the Shrine, in Xanthippi\u2019s Garden, as a sign of our hope in life in this world, and in the next. We pray that the Saint Nicholas Shrine, in which prayer and memory endure, will always prosper its mission of bringing healing and consolation, tolerance and understanding, to this remarkable City, to this exceptional Nation, and to a world whose need for these very virtues and graces is greater than ever. We know that in these profound symbols, all of you will find strength to assist in that mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Friends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We gathered together this evening to honor those whose \u201clast full measure of devotion\u201d is the healing balm to cure and restore our hearts that were broken by their sacrifice. That is why in our Christian Faith, the ultimate hope is the hope in the Resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Icon of the Resurrection in the Shrine \u2013 inspired by an archetypical masterwork of the Chora Monastery in the Queen of cities \u2013 manifests that hope in the Resurrection unto Eternal Life, for the \u201cBeacons of Hope\u201d we honor tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next time you visit the Shrine, look up to the Icon. In the company of the Saints behind the Risen Lord Jesus, you will see Police, Firefighters, and the EMTs who sacrificed themselves that day. You will see them in the insignia of their valor \u2013 representing all their brethren who gave the ultimate offering of their lives for the sake of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the resurrected Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine will continually reflect their light \u2013 which is truly the light of Christ \u2013 throughout this City and around the world, as a beacon of Hope, of Faith, and of Love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
