Miei cari fratelli e sorelle,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

rivolgo un cordiale saluto a tutti voi, specialmente al Metropolita Elpidophoros e al Cardinale Tobin, che ringrazio per aver voluto organizzare questo incontro nell’ambito del vostro pellegrinaggio. Siete tutti benvenuti. Mi spiace di essere leggermente in ritardo. Stamattina ci sono stati diversi incontri in programma. Sono per\u00f2 molto felice di poter trascorrere con voi il presente momento in questo splendido luogo, Castel Gandolfo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siete partiti dagli Stati Uniti che, come sapete, sono il mio Paese nativo, per questo viaggio, che vuol essere un ritorno alle radici, le fonti, i luoghi e le memorie degli Apostoli Pietro e Paolo a Roma, e dell’Apostolo Andrea a Costantinopoli. Questo \u00e8 anche un modo per sperimentare in forma nuova e concreta la fede che nasce dall’ascoltare il Vangelo, sentire il Vangelo trasmessoci dagli Apostoli (cfr Rm<\/em> 10,16). \u00c8 significativo che il vostro pellegrinaggio si svolga quest’anno, nel quale celebriamo i millesettecento anni del Concilio di Nicea. Il Simbolo della fede adottato dai Padri riuniti rimane \u2013 insieme alle aggiunte apportate dal Concilio di Costantinopoli del 381 \u2013 patrimonio comune di tutti i cristiani, per molti dei quali il Credo \u00e8 parte integrante delle celebrazioni liturgiche. Inoltre, per una provvidenziale coincidenza, quest’anno i due calendari in uso nelle nostre Chiese coincidono, cos\u00ec che abbiamo potuto cantare all’unisono l’Alleluia pasquale: “Cristo \u00e8 risorto! \u00c8 veramente risorto!”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tali parole proclamano che le tenebre del peccato e della morte sono state vinte dall’Agnello immolato, Ges\u00f9 Cristo nostro Signore. Questo ci ispira grande speranza, perch\u00e9 sappiamo che nessun grido delle vittime innocenti della violenza, nessun lamento delle madri in lutto per i loro figli rimarr\u00e0 inascoltato. La nostra speranza \u00e8 in Dio, e proprio perch\u00e9 attingiamo costantemente alla fonte inesauribile della sua grazia, siamo chiamati a esserne testimoni e portatori. La Chiesa cattolica sta celebrando il nostro Anno giubilare<\/a> il cui motto, scelto dal mio predecessore Papa Francesco<\/a>, \u00e8 Peregrinantes in Spe<\/em>, cio\u00e8 pellegrini nella speranza. Eminenza, Metropolita Elpidophoros, il suo stesso nome ci dice che Lei \u00e8 portatore di speranza! Spero che il vostro pellegrinaggio vi confermi tutti nella speranza che nasce dalla fede nel Signore risorto!<\/p>\n\n\n

Qui a Roma, avete trascorso del tempo in preghiera sulle tombe di Pietro e Paolo. Mentre ora visitate la Sede di Costantinopoli, vi chiederei di portare il mio saluto e il mio abbraccio, un abbraccio di pace, al mio venerato fratello il Patriarca Bartolomeo, che tanto cortesemente ha partecipato alla Santa Messa di inizio del mio Pontificato<\/a>. Spero di potervi incontrare di nuovo, tra qualche mese, per prendere parte alla Commemorazione ecumenica dell’anniversario del Concilio di Nicea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il vostro pellegrinaggio \u00e8 uno dei frutti abbondanti del movimento ecumenico volto a ristabilire la piena unit\u00e0 tra tutti i discepoli di Cristo, secondo la preghiera del Signore nell\u2019Ultima Cena, quando Ges\u00f9 disse: \u00abperch\u00e9 tutti siano una sola cosa\u00bb (Gv<\/em> 17,21). A volte diamo per scontati questi segni di condivisione e di comunione che, pur non significando ancora la piena unit\u00e0, manifestano gi\u00e0 il progresso teologico e il dialogo nella carit\u00e0 che hanno caratterizzato gli ultimi decenni. Il 7 dicembre 1965, alla vigilia della conclusione del Concilio Vaticano II<\/a>, il mio predecessore San Paolo VI<\/a> e il Patriarca Atenagora firmarono una Dichiarazione Congiunta, cancellando dalla memoria e dal vissuto della Chiesa le sentenze di scomunica seguite agli eventi del 1054. Prima di allora, un pellegrinaggio come il vostro probabilmente non sarebbe stato nemmeno possibile. L\u2019opera dello Spirito Santo ha creato nei cuori la disponibilit\u00e0 a compiere quei passi, come presagio profetico di piena e visibile unit\u00e0. Anche noi, da parte nostra, dobbiamo continuare a implorare dal Paraclito, dal Consolatore, la grazia di percorrere la via dell’unit\u00e0 e della carit\u00e0 fraterna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019unit\u00e0 tra i credenti in Cristo \u00e8 uno dei segni del dono divino della consolazione; la Scrittura promette che \u00aba Gerusalemme sarete consolati\u00bb (Is<\/em> 66,13). Roma, Costantinopoli e tutte le altre Sedi non sono chiamate a contendersi il primato, per non rischiare di ritrovarci come i discepoli che lungo il cammino, proprio mentre Ges\u00f9 annunciava la sua passione imminente, discutevano su chi di loro fosse il pi\u00f9 grande (cfr Mc<\/em> 9,33-37).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nella Bolla di indizione dell’Anno giubilare, Papa Francesco ha osservato che \u00abquesto Anno Santo orienter\u00e0 il cammino verso un\u2019altra ricorrenza fondamentale per tutti i cristiani: nel 2033, infatti, si celebreranno i duemila anni della Redenzione compiuta attraverso la passione, morte e risurrezione del Signore Ges\u00f9\u00bb (Spes non confundit<\/a><\/em>, 6). Spiritualmente, tutti noi abbiamo bisogno di tornare a Gerusalemme, la Citt\u00e0 della Pace, dove Pietro, Andrea e tutti gli Apostoli, dopo i giorni della passione e risurrezione del Signore, ricevettero lo Spirito Santo a Pentecoste, e da l\u00ec resero testimonianza a Cristo fino ai confini della terra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possa il ritorno alle radici della nostra fede far sperimentare a tutti noi il dono della consolazione di Dio e ci renda capaci, come il buon Samaritano, di versare sull\u2019umanit\u00e0 di oggi l\u2019olio della consolazione e il vino della gioia. Grazie.<\/p>\n\n\n

A joint Orthodox-Catholic pilgrimage to Rome, Constantinople, and Nicea \u201cis one of the abundant fruits of the ecumenical movement aimed at restoring full unity among all Christ\u2019s disciples,\u201d Pope Leo XIV told participants in the pilgrimage on Thursday, as he welcomed them to the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pilgrimage \u201cFrom Rome to New Rome\u201d comprises fifty Greek Orthodox, Byzantine Catholic, and Latin Catholic pilgrims from the United States, and is being led by the Greek Orthodox Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his greetings, Pope Leo noted that the pilgrimage is intended \u201cto return to the sources\u201d: to Rome, where Sts Peter and Paul were martyred; Constantinople\u2014now Istanbul\u2014associated with St Andrew; and to Nicea, the site of the first Ecumenical Council 1700 years ago this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pope went on to highlight the common celebration of Easter in 2025, observed on the same date by those who follow both the Gregorian and Julian liturgical calendars, which allowed all Christians to proclaim together the Easter Alleluia, \u201cChrist is risen! He is truly risen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those words, Pope Leo XIV said, proclaim the passion and resurrection of Jesus, \u201cthe Lamb that was slain\u201d to redeem us from \u201cthe darkness of sin and death.\u201d The redemption won by Christ \u201cinspires us with great hope\u201d while also calling us \u201cto be witnesses and bearers of hope,\u201d recalling the motto of the Jubilee Year, pilgrims of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is my hope that your pilgrimage will confirm all of you in the hope born of our faith in the Risen Lord!\u201d Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead to the group\u2019s visit to Constantinople, the Pope asked the pilgrims to convey his greetings to the Patriarch Bartholomew, saying he hoped to meet him again in person during the ecumenical commemoration of the anniversary of the Council of Nicea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Father went on to describe the group\u2019s ecumenical pilgrimage as one of the many signs that \u201calready manifest the theological progress and the dialogue of charity that mark recent decades,\u201d especially since the Joint Declaration of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras removing the mutual excommunications that followed the break in relations between Rome and Constantinople in 1054.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor our part,\u201d the Pope said, \u201cwe too must continue to implore from the Paraclete, the Consoler, the grace to pursue the path of unity and fraternal charity.\u201d Looking ahead to the two-thousandth anniversary of the Redemption, Pope Leo said, \u201cSpiritually, we must all return to Jerusalem, the City of Peace,\u201d where the Apostles received the Holy Spirit before going on to bear witness to Christ \u201cto the ends of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo concluded his address with the prayer, \u201cMay our return to the roots of our faith make all of us experience the gift of God\u2019s consolation and make us capable, like the Good Samaritan, of pouring out the oil of consolation and the wine of gladness on today\u2019s humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
