Την Τρίτη το βράδυ 18 Φεβρουαρίου στον Καθεδρικό Ι. Ναό Αγίου Νικολάου Τορόντο έγινε Θ. Λειτουργία προεξάρχοντος του Αρχιεπισκόπου Σωτηρίου με τη συμμετοχή του Επισκόπου Πατάρων Αθηναγόρα και πολλών Ιερέων της περιοχής.
Έψαλαν με βυζαντινή μεγαλοπρέπεια ο πρωτοψάλτης του Καθεδρικού Ναού Άγγελος Δημητρακόπουλος και οι φοιτητές της Ακαδημίας μας.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος στο κήρυγμά του μίλησε με θέμα «μνημονευτέον Θεού μάλλον ή αναπνευστέον». Εξήγησε, ότι αυτό στην ουσία σημαίνει, ότι όλη μας η ζωή πρέπει να είναι δοσμένη στον Θεό. Πρόσθεσε πως έτσι ήταν η ζωή της Αγ. Φιλοθέης, η οποία κατανάλωσε τη ζωή και την περιουσία της για την πατρίδα και τον λαό του Θεού.
Παρά την κακοκαιρία προσήλθαν με πολλή ευλάβεια οι χριστιανοί. Ο Βουλευτής κ. Α. Babikian, πρόσφερε στον Αρχιεπίσκοπο το μετάλλιο του βασιλέως μας Καρόλου του Γ΄.
Στη Θ. Λειτουργία έλαβαν μέρος η πρόεδρος της Φιλοπτώχου Καναδά κα Ζωή Βερούτη, πρόεδροι των Φιλοπτώχων τμημάτων της γύρω περιοχής, Άρχοντες του Οικουμενικού μας Πατριαρχείου και η πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Τορόντο κα Μπέτυ Σκουτάκη.
Παρετέθη δείπνο για όλους στο θαυμάσιο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο της Ι. Αρχιεπισκοπής μας, όπου τα πάντα ήσαν οργανωμένα άριστα από την πρόεδρο του Καθεδρικού μας Ναού κα Αναστασία Σωτηροπούλου και τους πολύτιμους συνεργάτες της.
Σημειώνεται, ότι στις 19 Φλεβάρη γιορτή της Αγ. Φιλοθέης έχει τα γενέθλιά του ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος, ο οποίος συμπλήρωσε 89 έτη. Δοξολόγησε τον Θεό, γιατί είναι σε αρίστη υγεία. Η ατμόσφαιρα ήταν πολύ γιορτινή όλη τη βραδιά με ύμνους και τραγούδια.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος ανέφερε, ότι ο Παναγιώτατος Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος έχει τα γενέθλιά του την 29η Φεβρουαρίου. Μίλησε με θαυμασμό για τον Πατριάρχη και η βραδιά έκλεισε με προσευχή και ψάλλοντας τη φήμη του Παναγιωτάτου.
Η Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή μας δηλώνει την απόλυτη ικανοποίησή της και εκφράζει τις ευχαριστίες της προς όλα τα Τμήματα Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητας Καναδά και τους υπεύθυνους που οργάνωσαν τη βραδιά.

Philoptochos Canada Celebrates Saint Philothei, its Patron Saint
On the evening of Tuesday, February 18, 2025, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Toronto, presided over by Archbishop Sotirios, with the participation of Bishop Athenagoras of Patara and many clergymen from the surrounding area.
The cathedral’s lead chanter, Angelos Dimitrakopoulos, along with students from our Theological Academy, chanted with Byzantine grandeur.
In his homily, Archbishop Sotirios spoke on the theme, “God must be remembered more than one breathes.” He explained that, in essence, this means that our entire life should be devoted to God. He added that this was precisely how Saint Philothei lived; dedicating her life and fortune to her homeland and the people of God.
Despite the inclement weather, the faithful attended with great reverence. Member of Provincial Parliament, Mr. Aris Babikian, presented Archbishop Sotirios with the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal.
Among those present at the Divine Liturgy were Mrs. Zoe Veroutis, President of Philoptochos Canada, the presidents of the surrounding Philoptochos chapters, Ecumenical Patriarchate Archons in Canada, and Mrs. Betty Skoutakis, President of the Greek Community of Toronto.
A dinner was hosted for all attendees at the splendid Cultural Centre of our Holy Archdiocese, where everything was excellently organized by Mrs. A. Sotiropoulou, President of the Cathedral Community, along with her dedicated collaborators.
It is noteworthy that on February 19th, the feast day of Saint Philothei, Archbishop Sotirios celebrated his 89th birthday. He praised God for being in excellent health. The atmosphere throughout the evening was particularly festive, filled with hymns and songs.
Archbishop Sotirios also mentioned that His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew celebrates his birthday on February 29th. He expressed profound admiration for the Patriarch, and the evening concluded with prayer and the chanting of the Polichronion (Many Years) in honour of His All-Holiness.
