I am particularly glad that the thirtieth anniversary of the election of my friend and brother Bartholomew as Patriarch of the ancient and glorious See of Constantinople will be celebrated by so many who will give thanks to the Lord for his life and ministry.
The good personal rapport between us was born on the very day of the inauguration of my ministry, when he honoured me with his presence in Rome; and it went on to ripen into a fraternal friendship in the many meetings we have had throughout these years, not only in Rome but also in Constantinople, Jerusalem, Assisi, Cairo, Lesbos and Bari.
We are united with Patriarch Bartholomew by a shared awareness of our joint pastoral responsibility towards the urgent challenges that the entire human family must face today. I am deeply grateful for the Ecumenical Patriarch’s commitment to the protection of creation and for his reflections on the matter, from which I have learned, and continue to learn, a great deal. With the outbreak of the pandemic and the spread of its dramatic healthcare, social and economic consequences, his witness and his teaching on the necessary spiritual conversion of humanity have gained further relevance.
Furthermore, His Holiness Bartholomew has unceasingly pointed to dialogue, in charity and in truth, as the only possible way for reconciliation between all believers in Christ and for the restoration of their full communion. We certainly wish to continue walking together along this path. It is our joint conviction that closeness and solidarity among us Christians and among our Churches are a necessary contribution to universal brotherhood and social friendship, which humanity so urgently needs.
With these sentiments, I wish to express to Patriarch Bartholomew my warmest wishes for his anniversary, asking God to grant him health, serenity, spiritual joy and – may I say – a sense of humour: even more!

Sono particolarmente lieto che il trentesimo anniversario dell’elezione dell’amico e fratello Bartolomeo quale Patriarca dell’antica e gloriosa sede di Costantinopoli venga celebrato da tanti, che vorranno rendere grazie al Signore per la sua vita e per il suo ministero.
La buona intesa personale tra noi è nata il giorno stesso dell’inaugurazione del mio ministero, quando egli mi onorò della sua presenza a Roma; ed è poi maturata in una fraterna amicizia nei tanti incontri che, nel corso di questi anni, abbiamo avuto, non solo qui a Roma ma anche a Costantinopoli, Gerusalemme, Assisi, Il Cairo, Lesvos e Bari.
Con il Patriarca Bartolomeo ci unisce la condivisa consapevolezza della nostra comune responsabilità pastorale nei confronti delle sfide urgenti che l’intera famiglia umana deve oggi affrontare. Sono sentitamente grato per l’impegno del Patriarca Ecumenico per la salvaguardia del creato e per le sue riflessioni in materia, dalle quali ho appreso e continuo ad apprendere tanto. Con lo scoppiare della pandemia e il dilagare delle sue drammatiche conseguenze sanitarie, sociali ed economiche, la sua testimonianza e il suo insegnamento sulla necessaria conversione spirituale dell’uomo hanno acquistato ulteriore rilevanza.
Inoltre, Sua Santità Bartolomeo ha incessantemente indicato il dialogo, nella carità e nella verità, come unica via possibile per la riconciliazione tra tutti i credenti in Cristo e per il ristabilimento della loro piena comunione. Su questa strada vogliamo certamente continuare a camminare insieme.
È nostra comune convinzione che la prossimità e la solidarietà tra noi cristiani e tra le nostre Chiese siano un contributo doveroso alla fraternità universale e all’amicizia sociale, di cui l’umanità ha tanto e urgente bisogno.
Con questi sentimenti desidero esprimere al Patriarca Bartolomeo i miei più fervidi auguri per il Suo anniversario chiedendo a Dio che gli conceda salute, serenità, gioia spirituale e – mi permetto di dire – senso dell’umorismo: di più!

Ο πάπας Φραγκίσκος υπογραμμίζει την απεριόριστη εκτίμησή του προς τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο
Ο πάπας Φραγκίσκος, σε βιντεοσκοπημένο μήνυμά του, θέλησε να ευχηθεί «υγεία, γαλήνη και πνευματική χαρά» για την τριακοστή επέτειο της εκλογής του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίου.
Μια επέτειος, τονίζει ο ποντίφικας, «την οποία γιορτάζουν πολλοί άνθρωποι, οι οποίοι επιθυμούν να ευχαριστήσουν τον Κύριο για τη ζωή και το ποιμαντικό έργο του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη».
Ο Φραγκίσκος, στο μήνυμά του, υπογραμμίζει την εγγύτητα και την κοινή δράση με τον προκαθήμενο της Ορθοδοξίας, σε ό,τι αφορά την προστασία της Πλάσης, «την πνευματική στροφή του ανθρώπου», αλλά και τον διάλογο, ο οποίος λειτουργεί ως οδός επανασυμφιλίωσης μεταξύ των πιστών.
Ο πάπας θέλησε να μιλήσει για την αδελφική φιλία με τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη, η οποία αναπτύχθηκε αμέσως μόλις διαδέχθηκε τον πάπα Βενέδικτο «όχι μόνον στη Ρώμη, αλλά και στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, στην Ασίζη, στο Κάιρο, στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στη Λέσβο και στο Μπάρι».
Ο Φραγκίσκος τονίζει, δε, ότι είναι «απόλυτα ευγνώμων στον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη για την προστασία της Πλάσης και για τους προβληματισμούς και τις σκέψεις του επί του θέματος αυτού, από τις οποίες διδάχθηκε και συνεχίζει να διδάσκεται τόσα πολλά πράγματα». Υπογραμμίζει επίσης τη σημασία της σκέψης και του μηνύματος του Βαρθολομαίου στην εποχή της πανδημίας κορονοϊού.
«Με το ξέσπασμα της πανδημίας και την επέκταση των δραματικών υγειονομικών, κοινωνικών και οικονομικών συνεπειών της, η μαρτυρία και η διδαχή του επί της αναγκαίας πνευματικής στροφής του ανθρώπου, απέκτησαν ακόμη μεγαλύτερη σημασία», είπε ο πάπας.
Ο πάπας Φραγκίσκος δεν θα μπορούσε να παραλείψει την προσπάθεια με στόχο την επιστροφή στην πλήρη κοινωνία των Χριστιανών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, στο βιντεοσκοπημένο μήνυμά του αναφέρει: «Είναι κοινή μας πεποίθηση ότι η εγγύτητα και η αλληλεγγύη ανάμεσα σε εμάς τους χριστιανούς και στις Εκκλησίες μας, αποτελούν μια επιβεβλημένη συνεισφορά στην οικουμενική αλληλεγγύη και στην κοινωνική φιλία, την οποία η ανθρωπότητα έχει μεγάλη και άμεση ανάγκη».
